These are our luxury handcrafted personalised wooden chess boards, we our very proud of our personalised wooden chess boards and it was the first gaming board we created many years ago now!
When it comes to good quality wooden chess boards, we are in a class of our own. We have be perfecting gluing fine timbers together to create beautiful wooden boards for many years and have now turned our skills into creating magnificent quality chess boards to be enjoyed for many years to come. Family heirlooms in fact.
Making our Chess Boards: Traditional Wooden Games premium quality engraved wooden chess boards are constructed completely by hand, from scratch, to order in our Cheshire workshop. There are many wooden chess boards on the market and made in a variety of different ways. The finest of these is being made from solid hardwoods instead of thin veneers. Naturally we have chosen this way of doing it.
The chess squares are 10mm thick individual precision cut pieces from high quality solid timber. No laminates are used. We use only the very finest Amish American Black Walnut, found in the North Appalachian Region of New England for our dark squares and good quality Basswood for the lighter squares. These timbers are considered very desirable for fine chess board making. We then lay out each individual chess square into a 35mm thick solid oak board. This ensures high strength and stability, making our chess board very solid and durable and quite unlike anything else on the market. This also means less chance of cracking or movement. We then repeatedly hand sand and finished each board with many coats of child safe, water, heat and alcohol resistant oil. The finish is quite exquisite.
Board sizes: Our bespoke wooden chess boards come in three standard sizes. 12”, 18” and 24”
Our 12” (30cm) chess board is perfect for chess pieces with a king the heights of 2 – 3 inches. Our 18” (45cm) chess board is ideal for a king height of 3 – 4 inches and our largest board, our 24” is ideal for a king height of up to 5 inches. We can also make personalised wooden chess boards to order. If you are wanting a specific size to suit your own chess pieces or would like your chess board to be constructed from a special exotic timber, we will be happy to discuss your requirements.
Personalisation: Our personalised wooden chess boards come with your choice of engraved words or lettering, on one side edge included in the price. If you require further engraving, you have the option to personalising the other three remaining faces of your chess board. Perfect for family names and dates, favourite quotes or special message, making them a very special gift for friends and family.
We can also engrave a secret or personal message for you on the underside of your wooden chess board, making it that little bit extra special. Something like a reading from your wedding day, a favourite poem or quote, something witty, or just something secret you don’t want anyone else to see – but you know it there.

18” Chess Board: 3.5cm x 45cm x 45cm – up to 20 characters per side
24” Chess Board: 4.5cm x 60cm x 60cm – up to 30 characters per side
